Pandit J. L. Nehru rightly remarks - "Life is governed and conditioned by the off-shoots of science, and it is now very difficult to imagine existence without them."
(1). Introduction:–– Modern age is the age of science. Science has given us wonderful things. Everything we use is the outcome of science. It has given man unlimited power. Man has conquered land, water and air. He has also travelled into space.
(2). Scientific outlook:–– Science has removed blind belief and superstition. People do not believe much in fate. This scientific outlook is an important thing of the modern age.
(3). Electricity:––Electricity is a wonderful gift of science. We cannot imag- ine life without it.
It runs our Trams, Mills and Factories. It keeps our houses cool and warm. It has removed darkness from the world.
(4). Means of recreation:–– Science has given us several means of recreation. Radio, Cinema and Television are good means of recreation to entertain us. Television brings the actual scenes before our eyes.
(5). Atomic Energy:–– Atomic energy is the latest discovery of science, with this people has reached the moon. It can meet the demands of energy.
(6). Agriculture:–– Better with the help of fertilizers, medicines and better irrigation facilities we can take bumper crops. 'Green Revolution' and 'White Revolution' (milk) have given us a lot.
(7). Medical science:–– Science has given many effective medicines to cure terrible diseases. Heart Surgery and heart transplantation have become ordi- nary things now-a-days. It has made life long. Diagnosis of diseases has become easy because of medical facilities. In fact, science has given eyes to the blind, ears to the deaf and legs to the lame. It has instilled new hope into sick people.
(8). Quick means of transport and communication:–– Science has given us quick means of transport and communication. They have made the world smaller. Trains, cars, ships and aeroplanes are the most wonderful gifts of science. Now messages can be sent to any part of the world in a short tmes. This is possible through telegraph, telephone and the wireless.
(9). The dark side of science:–– Science has its darker side also. It has made man's life miserable. Man has become a slave to machines. He avoids manual labour. He is becoming money minded. He has forgotten the path of religion. The invention of atom bombs is a threat to peace. All threats of war must be ended. Man is called the master of the world because of Science.
Professor Hardy has rightly said,
"Science is an angel in peace and devil in war."
